It is the student’s right to be in school. It is also the student’s responsibility to attend all assigned classes and study halls every day that school is in session and to be aware of and follow the correct procedures when absent from an assigned class or study hall. At the secondary level, it is the student’s responsibility to request any missed assignments due to an absence. At the elementary level, it is a shared responsibility between the parent/guardian, teacher, and student to request any missed assignments due to an absence.

Excused Absences

Work missed during an excused absence must be made up for credit to be granted. Excused absences include the following categories:

• Illness
• Serious illness in the student’s immediate family
• A death in the student’s immediate family or of a close friend or relative
• Acute or emergency medical or dental treatment
• Court appearances occasioned by family or personal action.
• Religious instruction not to exceed three hours in any week
• Physical emergency conditions such as fire, flood, storm, etc…
• Removal of a student pursuant to a suspension. Suspensions are to be handled as excused absences and students will be permitted to complete make-up work
• Religious holidays

The following reasons may be sufficient to constitute excused absences but will be limited on mandated federal and state testing days unless specific arrangements with building administration have been made which include confirmation of attendance on make-up testing days.

1. Routine medical and dental appointments
2. Official school field trip or other school-sponsored outings
3. Work at home not to exceed 3 days per semester
4. Pre-arranged travel

 

Unexcused Absences

All unauthorized absences are unexcused absences. Any absences not verified within two (2) school days after a student returns to school will be considered unexcused. Work missed during unexcused absences must be made-up, however, credit may not be granted. Unexcused absences may result in disciplinary action.

Parents have the ability to submit their student(s) absences via Skyward Family Access through web access or the Skyward app. 

To submit an absence online, follow the directions below: 

1. Start by selecting a specific student in Skyward Family Access, then select the Attendance tab on the left.
2. On the Attendance tab, choose Absence Requests in the top right corner. A pop-up will appear, click Add Request.
3. In the window, choose a Start Date and End Date. Both are required even in they are the same date. 
4. If the student will be absent all day, select the checkbox next to All Day. If the student will be absent for a portion of the day, uncheck the checkbox next to All Day and enter a Start time and End time.
5. Choose a Reason from the dropdown box, use your best judgement from the given selections.
6. For Illness related absences, list the symptoms of the illness in the Comments box. For all the reason codes, use the Comments box to provide the school with information about the absence.
7. Click Save. 
8. After saving, the Absence Requests area will show the Status of your request. Until the school approves the absence in the Skyward system, it will remain in a Pending Status. After the request is approved, the status will change to Accepted.

 

To submit an absence through the Skyward app, follow the directions below: 

1. Start by selecting a specific student, then navigate to the hamburger menu in the top right corner and select the Attendance tab.
2. From the Attendance tab, choose Add Absence Request. 
3. Choose a Start Date and End Date. Both are required even in they are the same date. 
4. If the student will be absent all day, click the slider next to All Day. When selected for All Day the slider should be green. If the student will be absent for a portion of the day, make sure the slider is grey and enter a Start time and End time.
5. Choose a Reason for the absence, use your best judgement from the given selections.
6. For Illness related absences, list the symptoms of the illness in the Comments box. For all the reason codes, use the Comments box to provide the school with information about the absence.
7. Hit Submit at the top of the screen after all details have been entered. 
8. After saving, the Absence Requests area will show the Status of your request. Until the school approves the absence in the Skyward system, it will remain in a Pending Status. After the request is approved, the status will change to Accepted.

 At the secondary level three tardies equal one unexcused absence.
